Reasons to Get an Antique Appraisal

Selling: know what a fair offer looks like before you accept one, from us or anyone else.

Settling an estate: executors and families need values to divide belongings fairly between heirs.

Downsizing: decide what to sell, what to give to family and what to donate.

Insurance: find out whether a piece is worth insuring separately.

Curiosity: sometimes you just want to know the story behind something you have lived with for years.

How it works

  • 1. Initial Consultation

Call or send a note to set a time. We can visit your home or meet you by appointment in Islip.

    • Not ready for a visit? Text clear photos of the front, back and any markings, and we will reply with a first opinion.

During that first conversation we ask what you have, roughly how much of it there is, and what you hope to do with it.

That tells us whether a photo review is enough, whether you should bring a few pieces to us, or whether a home visit makes more sense. Large or heavy items, full collections and whole-house contents are usually best seen where they are.

Tips for useful photos: shoot in daylight, fill the frame with the object, and add a close-up of every mark, stamp, label or signature. For furniture, include the back, the underside and an open drawer. For jewelry and silver, photograph the hallmarks. For paintings, include the back of the canvas or frame.

    Send us photos

  • 2. Item Evaluation

At the appointment, we look closely at:

    • When and where the piece was made, its state, and any ownership history

    • What it is made of and how well it was built

    • What comparable pieces are selling for right now

In practice, that means checking hallmarks and maker's marks, testing metals where needed, looking at construction details like joinery, screws and saw marks, and noting any repairs, replacements or missing parts. For art, we look at the signature, the medium, the frame and any gallery or auction labels. For coins, we consider date, mint mark, wear and eye appeal.

Condition is judged honestly. Normal wear is expected on older pieces and often adds character. Damage, heavy restoration or replaced parts usually lower value, and we will explain by how much it matters for your item.

  • 3. Detailed Valuation Report

We explain the value we arrive at and how we got there, and if you are thinking of selling, which route will likely bring the best result.

    • Every figure is explained so you can check our reasoning.

Different values serve different purposes. A fair market value is what a willing buyer would likely pay today. A retail or replacement value, used for insurance, is usually higher. An offer to buy reflects what a dealer can pay and still resell.

We tell you which kind of number you are hearing, so nothing is confusing later.

If you want to sell, we lay out the options side by side: a direct sale to us, consignment at auction, or inclusion in an estate or tag sale. Then the choice is yours, with no deadline and no obligation.

What We Appraise?

Things people often overlook

Broken or single gold jewelry: a lone earring, a snapped chain or a dented ring still has metal value.

Costume jewelry: signed pieces from well-known designers can sell better than many people expect.

Old watches that do not run: a stopped watch can still be valuable, and the movement may be worth more than the case.

Silver hiding in plain sight: tarnished trays and flatware in a sideboard are often sterling, not plate. Look for marks like "Sterling" or "925".

Paper and small items: postcards, old advertising, toy trains in the basement and coins in a coffee can all deserve a look before anything is thrown out.

Furniture labels and stamps: a paper label inside a drawer or a stamp on the back of a chair can change a value a great deal.

When you are clearing a home, it is worth having someone experienced walk through before the dumpster arrives.

A row of chess pieces sitting on top of a glass shelf.

Benefits of Professional Antique Appraisal Services

Avoid costly mistakes: guessing can mean letting a valuable piece go cheaply, or holding out for a price the market will not pay.

Current market knowledge: demand shifts from year to year, and we follow those shifts closely.

Better planning: whether you plan to sell, insure, divide among heirs or simply keep, a clear value helps.

Confidence: you get an honest explanation, not a sales pitch.

Common Questions About Antique Appraisals

Should I clean my items first? No. Polishing silver, cleaning coins or refinishing wood can reduce value. Show us things exactly as you found them.

How long does it take? A few items can often be reviewed in one short visit. A full house takes longer, and we will give you a realistic idea at the start.

Do I have to sell to you? Never. Many people get an appraisal and keep everything, and that is completely fine.

What if the item is worth very little? We will say so kindly and honestly, and suggest whether it is better kept, donated or included in a tag sale.
